Third Conditional / Tercer Condicional

Utilizamos el Tercer Condicional cuando imaginamos un pasado diferente con un resultado diferente. En otras palabras, la condición nunca se cumplió.

Estructura	If + Past Perfect	Would have + Past Participle

El orden de las cláusulas no cambia el significado. Solamente debes separar las cláusulas con una coma cuando la If Clause está al principio.

Afirmativa: If I had trained harder, I would have won the tournament.

Afirmativa (cláusulas invertidas): I would have won the tournament if I had trained harder.

Negativa: If I had not been busy, I would have helped you.

En el habla cotidiana es muy frecuente usar contracciones en el Tercer Condicional:

'd have = would have

hadn't = had not

wouldn't have = would not have

If she had not called, I would not have known.	If she hadn't called, I wouldn't have known.

If Carmen had practiced a lot, she would have won the contest.	Si Carmen hubiera practicado mucho, habría ganado el concurso.
If the TV had not been broken, we would not have been bored.	Si la televisión no se hubiera roto, no nos habríamos aburrido.
If you had not been wearing a helmet, you would have died.	Si no hubieras estado usando un casco, habrías muerto.
If I had had enough money, I would have bought the phone yesterday.	Si hubiera tenido suficiente dinero, habría comprado el teléfono ayer.
If I had come earlier, I would not have missed the movie.	Si hubiera venido antes, no me habría perdido la película.
If we had had a garden, we would have had a dog.	Si hubiéramos tenido un jardín, habríamos tenido un perro.
If the weather had been good, I would have gone swimming.	Si el tiempo hubiera sido bueno, habría ido a nadar.
If I had followed your advice, I would have been healthy.	Si hubiera seguido tu consejo, habría estado sano.
If you had run, you would have caught the bus.	Si hubieras corrido, habrías cogido el autobús.
If I had not been busy, I would have helped you.	Si no hubiera estado ocupado, te habría ayudado.
