Zero Conditional / Condicional Cero

Utilizamos la Condicional Cero para expresar verdades generales, hechos científicos y situaciones que son siempre ciertas. Usa el presente simple en ambas cláusulas.

El orden de las cláusulas no cambia el significado. Solamente debes separar las cláusulas con una coma cuando la If Clause está al principio.

Afirmativa: If you heat ice, it melts.

Afirmativa (cláusulas invertidas): Ice melts if you heat it.

Negativa: If you don't study, you don't learn.

En el Zero Conditional, when puede reemplazar a if sin cambiar el significado, porque el resultado es siempre cierto.

If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.

When you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.

Errores comunes

When you heat water to 100 degrees, would boil.	When you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils. (when reemplaza a if sin cambiar la estructura ni el tiempo verbal)
If you heated ice, it melts.	If you heat ice, it melts. (la cláusula con "if" también va en Presente Simple, nunca en pasado)
If it rain, you take an umbrella.	If it rains, you take an umbrella. (con he/she/it, el verbo en la cláusula con "if" también lleva la -s de tercera persona)

Notas adicionales

• El Zero Conditional se usa para hechos siempre verdaderos, no para situaciones hipotéticas o futuras. Por eso ambas cláusulas van en Presente Simple — no hay nada hipotético en que el agua hierva a 100°, es un hecho científico constante.
• "If" y "when" son intercambiables en el Zero Conditional sin cambiar el significado, a diferencia de otros condicionales. If you heat water, it boils y When you heat water, it boils comunican exactamente lo mismo, porque el resultado siempre ocurre — en otros condicionales (como el Primero), "if" y "when" sí tienen matices distintos.
• El orden de las cláusulas es libre, pero la coma solo aparece cuando la cláusula con "if" va primero. If you heat ice, it melts (con coma) es igual de correcto que Ice melts if you heat it (sin coma) — el significado no cambia, solo el orden y la puntuación.
