Mixed Conditional I / Condicional Mixto I

Una condicional es mixta cuando sus cláusulas (If Clause, Main Clause) se refieren a tiempos distintos.

Present Result of a Past Condition.

Utilizamos el Condicional Mixto I para hablar sobre el resultado presente de una condición pasada irreal.

Esta combinación muestra cómo una acción pasada irreal puede tener un resultado irreal en el presente o en el futuro. En otras palabras, el Condicional Mixto I expresa una condición irreal en el pasado y su posible resultado en el presente.

Los Mixed Conditionals combinan los patrones del Second Conditional (situaciones irreales en el presente) y el Third Conditional (situaciones irreales en el pasado).

Afirmativa: If I had gone to university, I would have a better job.

Afirmativa (cláusulas invertidas): I would have a better job if I had gone to university.

Negativa: If I had not drunk, I would not have a hangover now.

Es útil comparar el Mixed Conditional I con el Third Conditional para entender la diferencia:

Errores comunes

If I had not eaten so much, I would not have felt sick.	If I had not eaten so much, I would not feel sick. (el resultado es presente, así que va con "would" + base form, no "would have" + participio — eso sería Third Conditional)
If I had gone to university, I have a better job.	If I had gone to university, I would have a better job. (el resultado necesita "would", no el Presente Simple)
If I had gone to university, I would have a better job yesterday.	If I had gone to university, I would have a better job. (no se agrega una marca de tiempo pasado al resultado — el resultado es siempre presente en este condicional mixto)
If Carla had not had a good income, she wouldn't have a new car.	If Carla had not had a good income, she would not have a new car now. (agregar "now" o una marca de tiempo presente ayuda a distinguir el resultado presente del pasado)

Notas adicionales

• La clave del Mixed Conditional I es que la condición es pasada pero el resultado es presente — nunca confundir el resultado con el patrón del Third Conditional. Si el resultado usa "would have + Past Participle", en realidad se está describiendo el Third Conditional (resultado pasado), no este condicional mixto.
• Palabras como "now", "today" o "still" en la cláusula de resultado ayudan a señalar que se trata de un resultado presente, no pasado. I would not be tired now deja claro que el resultado ocurre en el presente, reforzando la diferencia con el Third Conditional.
• El Mixed Conditional I combina la estructura del Third Conditional en la cláusula con "if" (Past Perfect) con la estructura del Second Conditional en el resultado (would + base form). Entender esta combinación ayuda a recordar por qué cada cláusula tiene una forma distinta, en vez de memorizar la regla sin razonarla.
