Third Conditional / Tercer Condicional

Utilizamos el Tercer Condicional cuando imaginamos un pasado diferente con un resultado diferente. En otras palabras, la condición nunca se cumplió. Usa el pasado perfecto en la cláusula con "if", y "would have + participio" (ver modal perfecto) en el resultado.

El orden de las cláusulas no cambia el significado. Solamente debes separar las cláusulas con una coma cuando la If Clause está al principio.

Afirmativa: If I had trained harder, I would have won the tournament.

Afirmativa (cláusulas invertidas): I would have won the tournament if I had trained harder.

Negativa: If I had not been busy, I would have helped you.

En el habla cotidiana es muy frecuente usar contracciones en el Tercer Condicional:

'd have = would have

hadn't = had not

wouldn't have = would not have

Errores comunes

If I had studied more, I would passed.	If I had studied more, I would have passed. (después de "would" siempre va "have" antes del Past Participle en este condicional)
If I had studied more, I would have study.	If I had studied more, I would have studied. (después de "have" el verbo va en Past Participle, no en base form)
If it had rained, we would go to the beach.	If it had rained, we would not have gone to the beach. (cuidado con la lógica: si algo no ocurrió en el pasado, el resultado también describe algo que no ocurrió)

Notas adicionales

• El Tercer Condicional habla exclusivamente del pasado — de algo que no ocurrió y de su resultado hipotético, también en el pasado. A diferencia del Segundo Condicional (presente/futuro poco probable), aquí ambas cláusulas se refieren a hechos ya terminados que no sucedieron como se describe.
• Las contracciones son extremadamente frecuentes en el habla natural del Tercer Condicional, sobre todo "'d" (que puede significar had o would según el contexto) y "'d have". If I'd studied more, I'd have passed suena mucho más natural en conversación que la forma completa con "had"/"would have".
• El Tercer Condicional siempre implica que la condición fue exactamente lo opuesto a lo descrito. If I had studied more, I would have passed implica que en realidad NO estudié más y NO aprobé — describir un pasado que no ocurrió es la esencia misma de este condicional.
