Mixed Conditional II / Condicional Mixto II

Una condicional es mixta cuando sus cláusulas (If Clause, Main Clause) se refieren a tiempos distintos.

Past Result of a Present Condition.

Utilizamos el Condicional Mixto II para hablar sobre el resultado pasado de una condición presente irreal.

Esta combinación muestra cómo una condición presente irreal puede tener un resultado irreal en el pasado. En otras palabras, el Condicional Mixto II expresa una condición irreal en el presente y su posible resultado en el pasado.

Los Mixed Conditionals combinan los patrones del Second Conditional (situaciones irreales en el presente) y el Third Conditional (situaciones irreales en el pasado).

Afirmativa: If you were faster, you would have won the race.

Afirmativa (cláusulas invertidas): You would have won the race if you were faster.

Negativa: If I were you, I would not have said that.

Es útil comparar el Mixed Conditional II con el Second Conditional para entender la diferencia:

Errores comunes

If I were taller, I would become a basketball player.	If I were taller, I would have become a basketball player. (el resultado es pasado, así que necesita "would have" + participio, no solo "would" + base form — eso sería Second Conditional)
If I was you, I would not have said that.	If I were you, I would not have said that. (con To Be, "were" es la forma estándar para todos los sujetos en este condicional mixto)
If I were good at math, I would have become an engineer yesterday.	If I were good at math, I would have become an engineer. (no se agrega una marca de tiempo pasado; el resultado ya está marcado por "would have + participio")
If we had a better trainer, we would win the competition.	If we had a better trainer, we would have won the competition. (mismo error: confundir el resultado pasado con el patrón del Second Conditional)

Notas adicionales

• La clave del Mixed Conditional II es la opuesta al Mixed Conditional I: la condición es presente pero el resultado es pasado. Si la cláusula con "if" usa Past Perfect ("had" + participio), en realidad se está describiendo el Mixed Conditional I (condición pasada), no este.
• El Mixed Conditional II combina la estructura del Second Conditional en la cláusula con "if" (Simple Past) con la estructura del Third Conditional en el resultado (would have + Past Participle). Es literalmente la combinación inversa del Mixed Conditional I, y confundir ambos es un error muy común.
• Este condicional es muy útil para hablar de cómo un rasgo o circunstancia actual (que no cambia) habría afectado eventos pasados. If I were taller, I would have become a basketball player asume que "ser alto" es una característica constante que ya tendrías ahora, y por eso pregunta cómo habría cambiado algo que ya pasó.
